It started around midnight, the game of 21. It was the first time I had ever
played the game, but it didn’t take long to learn the rules. About 15 of us
were gathered around a small gas lamp, beers in hand. It took a while for us
to actually reach 21, as some people lost focus and others just could not
understand the basis of the game! So eventually a few rules were made, one by
Elle, who asked for my advice on what to do. For lack of imagination I
suggested the North American version of “sommersaults” for every mistake made,
which I believe translates into “rolley polleys” in this country. Elle
cunningly refined this as applying only to men, and requiring not 1 but 4
rolley polleys for every mistake made while playing the game. And so the game
continued.
Approximately 30 minutes later the group was blessed with a visit from a drunk
French-“wannabe” wearing bright orange shorts. Oblivious to his appearance,
he sits down in the circle and attempts to hail the French as some of the
greatest people on earth. Note: Mark bursts into uncontrollable drunken
laughter, and apparently I seemed to be the only one knowing what he was on
about! Anyway, by this time Rick had managed to drink himself into quite a
state, and offered the most entertainment with his quasi-rolley polleys down
the Taylor estate grounds. Mr. Taylor himself also blessed us with vivid
entertainment, as he elegantly rolled into a bush on one of his final rolls.
Most of the footy lads, while not gymnasts, did manage to eek out some
semi-decent cartwheels.
